Materials

Pattern

Top of Crown

  1. Foundation Chain: Ch 4 and join with a slip stitch (SL ST) to form a ring.
  2. Row 1: SC 7 times into the ring.
  3. Row 2: SC twice in each stitch around (14 stitches).
  4. Row 3: SC in the first stitch, SC twice in the next stitch, SC in the next stitch. Repeat from * to the end of the row.
  5. Row 4 and Onward: SC in each stitch of the previous row, making 7 evenly spaced increases per row. Do not increase directly over the previous row’s increases. Continue until the diameter of the crown measures 8¼ inches. Fasten off.

Side of Crown

  1. Foundation Chain: Ch a length equal to your desired head circumference and join with a SL ST to form a ring.
  2. Row 1: SC in each stitch of the foundation chain.
  3. Rows 2–3: SC in each stitch of the previous row. Ch 1, turn at the end of Row 3.
  4. Row 4: SC in each stitch of the previous row until 4½ inches remain unworked. Turn.
  5. Row 5 and Onward: Work 1 SL ST in the first SC, SC in each stitch around, making 3 evenly spaced increases per row. Work 1 SL ST in the last SC. Repeat until the side of the crown measures 2¼ inches in width. Fasten off.
  6. Finishing the Crown: Attach Gimp at the end of Row 6 on the right side.
  • SC evenly around the entire top edge of the side of the crown.
  • SC for 2 additional rows. Fasten off.
  • Join the side of the crown to the top of the crown using SC on the right side, working over the Milliner’s Wire for added structure.

Band

  1. Row 1: Attach Gimp at the bottom edge of the hat on the right side. SC in each stitch of the foundation chain, picking up the remaining loop.
  2. Rows 2–3: SC in each stitch of the previous row. Fasten off.

Finishing

  1. Fold down the crown for the beret style.
  2. Add a feather for embellishment, if desired, as illustrated in the original design.
