Tassel Beaded Hat Crochet Pattern

MATERIALS:

  • Worsted weight #4 yarn (the pattern originally used Clark’s O.N.T. Cotton Rug Yarn): 1 ball in any color.
  • Crochet Hook No. 8
  • Beads for trim.
  • 18 inches of millinery wire.

CROWN

  1. Starting at the center of the Crown: Chain 4, join with a slip stitch (sl st) to form a ring.
  • 1st round: 8 single crochets (sc) in the ring. Join with a sl st.
  • 2nd round: 2 sc in each sc around. Join (16 sc).
  • 3rd round: Chain 3 (counts as first double crochet [dc]), 1 dc in the same place as the sl st, skip 1 sc, 2 dc in next sc. Repeat from * around. Join to the 3rd chain of the beginning chain-3 (8 dc-groups).
  • 4th round: Sc in each dc around. Join (16 sc).
  1. Adding Millinery Wire:
    Overlap the edges of the wire by 1 inch and secure them tightly together.
  • 5th round: Hold the wire at the top of the previous round and work sc stitches over it to conceal the wire. Sc in each sc around. Join. The piece now measures 5 inches in diameter.

BRIM

  1. 6th round: Repeat the 3rd round, this time creating 12 groups of 2 dc. Join.
  2. 7th round: Slip stitch (sl st) in the next dc, sc in the same stitch as the sl st, make a shell (3 dc) between the first and second dc-groups, skip 1 dc, sc in the next dc, make a shell (3 dc) between the next dc-groups. Repeat from * around (12 shells). Join.
  3. 8th round: Chain 1, 2 dc in the same place as the sl st, sc in the center dc of the next shell, shell in the next sc. Repeat from * around. Join.
  4. 9th round: Sl st in the next dc, sc in the same stitch as the sl st, shell in the next sc, sc in the center dc of the next shell. Repeat from * around. Join.
  5. Repeat the 8th and 9th rounds alternately 3 more times. Fasten off.

FINISHING

  1. Beads: Sew beads onto the hat wherever desired for decoration.
  2. Cord:
  • With a double strand of yarn, chain 23 inches. Fasten off.
  • Tie the cord around one of the dc-groups from the 6th round.

TASSELS

  1. Make 2 tassels as follows:
  • Cut a piece of cardboard 3 inches long.
  • Wind the yarn around the cardboard 22 times.
  • Tie the loops securely at the top of the cardboard with an 8-inch piece of yarn.
  • Remove the loops from the cardboard and wind another piece of yarn around the tassel 1 inch down from the top. Tie securely.
  • Cut the loops at the bottom and trim the ends evenly.
  1. Sew a tassel to each end of the cord. Tie the cord into a bow and attach it to the hat.
