Crochet Flowers and Bow Hair Clip

MATERIALS:

  • Size 5 pearl cotton (the pattern originally used J. & P. Coats or Clark’s O.N.T. Pearl Cotton), 1 ball each of Indian Pink, Hunter’s Green, and Ecru.
    • Alternative to Double Threads of Size 10 Crochet Thread:
      When a pattern calls for using 2 strands of #10 crochet thread, a suitable alternative is lightweight #1 yarn. This substitution provides a similar thickness and drape, though it is essential to check your gauge and adjust the hook size as needed to ensure the desired fit and appearance.
  • Steel crochet hook No. 2.
  • ¾ yard velvet ribbon, 3 inches wide.
  • A hair clip or small comb.
  • hot glue
  • Note: Divide each color into 2 parts and use the thread double throughout.

TABS

  1. Cut 2 pieces of ribbon: one 5 inches long, and the other 6½ inches long.
  2. Cut diagonally across one end of each piece to form a point.

Picot Edging for Tabs:

  1. With Green, ch 24.
  2. Work sc in 2nd ch from hook, *ch 4, sc in next 3 ch. Repeat from * across, ending with ch 4, sc in last ch.
  3. Fasten off. Sew the starting chain of this piece to the diagonal edge of one Tab.
  4. Finish the pointed end of the other Tab in the same way.

SMALL FLOWER (Make 4):

  1. With Indian Pink, ch 4. Join with sl st to form a ring.
  2. In the ring, *make (sc, ch 2, 3 d tr, ch 2). Repeat from * 4 more times (5 petals total). Join and fasten off.

Flower Center:

  1. With Ecru, ch 2.
  2. In 2nd ch from hook, make *(sc, ch 3, sc in 3rd ch from hook). Repeat from * 6 times.
  3. Join and fasten off.

Assembly:

  • Sew the center to each small flower with long stitches using Indian Pink thread.
  • Sew a small flower to both ends of the Picot Edging on each Tab.

Join Tabs:

  • Place the short Tab on top of the long Tab.
  • Sew them together, shirring the top edges in to measure 1½ inches.

BOW

  1. Fold the remaining ribbon into 2 flat loops and sew them together, shirring across the center.

LARGE FLOWERS (Make 3):

  1. With Indian Pink, ch 4.
  2. 1st rnd: In 4th ch from hook, make 8 dc. Join with sl st in top of the starting ch.
  3. 2nd rnd: In the same place as the sl st, make *(sc, ch 2, 3 d tr, ch 2, sc in next st). Repeat from * around to make 9 petals. Join and fasten off.

Flower Center:

  • Follow the instructions for the Small Flower center using Ecru.
  • Sew the center to each large flower using long stitches with Pink thread.

Picot Edging (Leaf):

  1. Make a piece of Picot Edging in Green, joining the ends to form a ring.
  2. Sew the joining to the back of each large flower to form a leaf.

ASSEMBLY

  1. Group the large flowers as shown in the illustration (or to your preference) and sew them or hot glue them to the center of the velvet bow.
  2. Sew or hot glue the Tabs to the underside of the bow.
  3. Securely sew or hot glue the entire arrangement onto a clip or small comb.
