Alternative to Knitting: Cuffed Crochet Instructions (Slip Stitch in Back Loop Only)

  1. Start the Cuff
Using the same crochet hook as the motif (or one size smaller for a snugger fit), attach yarn to the short edge of the shoulder shrug.
  2. Foundation Chain
Chain the desired length of the cuff. For example, if you want a cuff approximately 3 inches wide, chain around 12–15 stitches (adjust for your preference).
  3. Row 1 (Slip Stitch in Back Loop)
Starting in the second chain from the hook, slip stitch in the back loop only of each chain across. (Slip stitches are made by inserting the hook, pulling up a loop, and pulling it through the loop on the hook.)
  4. Turn and Continue
At the end of the row, chain 1, turn your work, and slip stitch in the back loop only of each stitch across.
  5. Repeat Rows
Repeat the process, working rows of slip stitches in the back loop only, until the ribbing matches the length of the cuff opening on the shrug.
  6. Attach the Cuff
When the ribbing reaches the desired length, fold it in half so the edges meet. Slip stitch the two edges together, working through the back loop of the last row and the foundation chain. This creates a seamless join.
  7. Finish
Fasten off and weave in any loose ends. Repeat for the other cuff.

This slip-stitch ribbing is both stretchy and elegant, making it a perfect complement to the scalloped shoulder shrug.

Finishing

  • Block the shrug by pressing it gently through a damp cloth to set the shape.
  • Enjoy your dazzling shoulder shrug, perfect for any special occasion!
