Shoulder Shrug with Sequined Motifs: A Dazzling Vintage Accent

The Shoulder Shrug with Sequined Motifs, originally featured in Knit and Crochet Style Parade by Coats and Clark’s (1954), is the epitome of mid-century glamour. This stunning piece was designed as an elegant cover-up, perfect for adding sparkle to eveningwear or a special occasion outfit. Its intricate sequined embellishments catch the light beautifully, creating a dazzling effect that elevates even the simplest ensemble.

This pattern is best suited for intermediate to advanced crafters due to the combination of fine stitching and embellishment techniques. The construction of the shrug itself is straightforward, making it a manageable project for those with knitting or crochet experience. Adding sequins requires precision, but it’s a skill that can be easily learned with practice. The effort is well worth it, as the sequined motifs transform the shrug into a showstopping accessory that feels as glamorous today as it did in the 1950s.

Versatile and timeless, this shrug can be styled in a variety of ways. Pair it with a cocktail dress for an authentic vintage vibe or drape it over a modern jumpsuit for a contemporary twist. Experiment with yarns in luxurious fibers, such as silk or merino blends, to enhance its elegant design. Whether crafted for a formal event or as a unique wardrobe accent, this Shoulder Shrug with Sequined Motifs is a true treasure of vintage style.

Alternative to Knitting: Cuffed Crochet Instructions (Slip Stitch in Back Loop Only)

  1. Start the Cuff
Using the same crochet hook as the motif (or one size smaller for a snugger fit), attach yarn to the short edge of the shoulder shrug.
  2. Foundation Chain
Chain the desired length of the cuff. For example, if you want a cuff approximately 3 inches wide, chain around 12–15 stitches (adjust for your preference).
  3. Row 1 (Slip Stitch in Back Loop)
Starting in the second chain from the hook, slip stitch in the back loop only of each chain across. (Slip stitches are made by inserting the hook, pulling up a loop, and pulling it through the loop on the hook.)
  4. Turn and Continue
At the end of the row, chain 1, turn your work, and slip stitch in the back loop only of each stitch across.
  5. Repeat Rows
Repeat the process, working rows of slip stitches in the back loop only, until the ribbing matches the length of the cuff opening on the shrug.
  6. Attach the Cuff
When the ribbing reaches the desired length, fold it in half so the edges meet. Slip stitch the two edges together, working through the back loop of the last row and the foundation chain. This creates a seamless join.
  7. Finish
Fasten off and weave in any loose ends. Repeat for the other cuff.

This slip-stitch ribbing is both stretchy and elegant, making it a perfect complement to the scalloped shoulder shrug.

Finishing

  • Block the shrug by pressing it gently through a damp cloth to set the shape.
  • Enjoy your dazzling shoulder shrug, perfect for any special occasion!
