Easy Double Crochet Envelope Purse Pattern
MATERIALS:
- Size 10 crochet thread, 4 balls of Skipper Blue and 2 balls of Ecru (the pattern originally used J & P Coats Knit-Cro-Sheen). Of course, you can use any color combo you want.
- Steel crochet hook No. 1.
- ½ yard of quilted satin for lining. You can actually use any fabric you have on hand. I recommend using cotton fabric. It’s easier to work with and it’s more durable.
- 2 large snap fasteners.
NOTES:
- Use double thread throughout.
- Light weight #2 or Superfine Sock yarn #1 yarn can be substituted for double thread; check gauge and adjust the hook size as needed.
- On the other hand If you use a larger yarn size and or needle size without considering the guage…as long as you follow the directions below, the worse case scenario is you’ll wind up with a bigger purse.
GAUGE:
- 7 spaces (sps) = 2 inches.
- 6 rows = 1½ inches.
INSTRUCTIONS:
BASE:
- With Skipper Blue, ch 87 to measure approximately 12 inches.
- Row 1: Dc in 5th ch from hook, ch 1, skip 1 ch, dc in next ch. Repeat from * across (42 spaces). Ch 4, turn.
- Row 2: Dc in next dc, ch 1. Repeat from * across. Ch 4, turn.
- Repeat Row 2 until the piece measures 20 inches. Fasten off.
WEAVING:
- With a double thread of Ecru, make a chain slightly longer than twice the length of the crocheted piece.
- Weave this chain over and under the rows of spaces on the crocheted piece lengthwise to the opposite end.
- Turn and weave the remainder of the chain through the same spaces, alternating over and under from the first pass.
LINING:
- Cut quilted satin slightly smaller than the crocheted piece and sew it to the wrong side of the crochet work.
- Fold the piece into an envelope shape:
- Bring one short side up to form the main pocket.
- Fold the other short side down to form the envelope flap.
- Sew up the short sides of the pocket with neat over-and-over stitches on the wrong side.
FINISHING:
- Attach 2 large snap fasteners to the inside of the flap to secure the purse.
- Optionally, decorate with a bow or embellishments as desired.
