Materials
- Worsted weight #4 yarn in white, yellow, teal, red and black
- 4 balls of White
- 1 ball each of Spanish Red, Dark Yellow, Mid Rose, and Hunter’s Green
- Crochet Hook G/6
- yarn needle and scissors
Four Flower Potholder Pattern
Rose Motif
(Make 4 in total: 1 Rose, 1 Red, and 2 Yellow)
- Starting the Rose:
- Make a magic circle.
- Round 1:
- Chain 6 (counts as 1 dc + ch 3), (dc in the ring, ch 3) 7 times.
- Slip stitch to the 3rd chain of the starting chain. (8 spaces)
- Round 2:
- In each ch-3 space, work: sc, hdc, 3 dc, hdc, sc. (Forms 8 petals.)
- Round 3:
- Sc into the first post then Chain 5, sc between the next 2 petals. Repeat around. End by sc into the first post.
- Round 4:
- In each ch-5 loop, work: sc, hdc, 5 dc, hdc, sc. Fasten off.
Edging for Roses
Yellow Rose:
- Attach Green to the 3rd dc of any petal (the tip of the petal).
- Chain 5 and make a 2TrTog cluster in the same stitch. (To make a cluster: yarn over twice, insert hook, pull up a loop, yarn over and pull through 2 loops twice; repeat for the number of stitches, then yarn over and pull through all loops on the hook.)
- Chain 3, make a 3TrTog cluster in the same stitch, ch 3, (dc, ch 3, dc) in the tip of the next petal.
- Repeat around, ending with ch 3 and slip stitch in the top of the first cluster and fasten off.
Red Rose:
- Attach Green to the tip of any petal.
- Chain 5 and make a 2TrTog cluster as before.
- Chain 1, sc into the top of the leaf of the yellow rose that would be directly across from the leaf of the red rose. Then ch 1, make a 3TrTog cluster in the same spot as the last cluster on the red Rose.
- Chain 3, dc into the top of the next petal on the red rose, ch 1, sc into the chain space of the next leaf on the yellow rose, ch 1, dc into the same place as the last dc in the red rose.
- Repeat this process for the remaining two roses, joining them to the adjacent roses.
- At the end slip stitch into the first chain and fasten off.
Outer Edging
- Attach White to the chain space between any corner leaf cluster.
- Work as follows:
- Round 1: Chain 3, 2 dc in the same space, 3 dc in each chain space around, making (3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) at the corner chain space of each corner leaf cluster. End with 3 dc in the same cluster as the first group, ch 3, and slip stitch to the 3rd chain of the starting chain.
- Round 2: Chain 1, sc in each dc around, making 5 sc in each corner chain space. End with a slip stitch to the first sc. Fasten off.
Back
- Start the Center:
- With white, make a magic circle.
- Round 1:
- Chain 3 (counts as dc), make 2 dc in the ring, chain 3, 3 dc in the ring, 3 more times.
- slip stitch into first chain 3 (This forms a square.)
- Round 2:
- Chain 3, dc in each dc across to the corner, in the corner space make 2 dc, chain 3, 2 dc. Repeat around.
- Join with a slip stitch.
- Round 3:
- Repeat Round 2, continuing to increase at the corners.
- Stop when you have completed 9 rounds. Fasten off.
- Make sure to use a yarn needle and weave in all your loose ends if you haven’t done so already.
Edging
- Place the Front and Back pieces together, wrong sides facing. Use a long piece of yarn and baste the two pieces together to make sure that they stay aligned while you work.
- Attach black to a corner with the Front facing you. We are going to be working into the chain spaces of the front. Not the stitches.
- Edge Pattern:
- Chain 3 (counts as dc), make 3 dc in the same corner.
- Make the loop for hanging the potholder: Chain 15, slip stitch into the 15th chain from the hook (loop made), make 4 dc in the same space.
(Sc in the next space, in the next space make: 3 dc, chain 3, sc in the 3rd chain from the hook (picot), and 3 dc). Sc in the next space. repeat until you reach the corner. In the corner, make: 4 dc, picot, and 4 dc. Repeat around. - Join and fasten off.
