Summer Gloves Crochet Pattern

Materials:

  • Size 30 Crochet Thread (3 balls; the pattern originally used J. & P. Coats or Clark’s O.N.T. Mercerized Crochet).
  • Steel Crochet Hook No. 10 or 11.
  • Gauge: 7 spaces make 1 inch; 11 rounds make 2 inches.

Left Hand:

Starting at the wrist edge:

  1. Foundation: Chain 55 to measure 8 inches. Join with a slip stitch, ensuring not to twist the chain.
  2. 1st Round: Chain 3, skip 1 chain, double crochet (dc) in next chain, chain 1. Repeat from * around, ending with chain-1. Do not join rounds; work continuously.
  3. 2nd Round: Double crochet in the space between chain-3 and first double crochet, chain 1, double crochet in next space. Repeat from * around (43 spaces).
  4. 3rd to 5th Rounds: Chain 1, double crochet in the next space. Repeat from * around.
  5. 6th Round (Increase Round): Make 3 chain-1 spaces, chain 1, in the next space make (double crochet, chain 1, double crochet) [an increase]. Make 14 more spaces, chain 1, in the next space (double crochet, chain 1, double crochet) [another increase]. Complete the round with chain-1 spaces.
  6. 7th Round (Increase Placement): Make chain-1 spaces to the first increase of the previous round, chain 1, in the increase space make (double crochet, chain 1, double crochet). Continue making chain-1 spaces to the next increase and repeat the (double crochet, chain 1, double crochet) increase. Finish the round with chain-1 spaces.

Repeat the 7th round until there are 14 rows of increases.

Thumb Opening:

  1. Work chain-1 spaces around to the second increase, but do not increase in this round. Chain 5, slip stitch into the space of the second increase, chain 2, slip stitch into the space over the first increase of the previous round (this forms the thumb opening). Chain 1 and continue making chain-1 spaces to complete the round.
  2. Work 6 additional rounds of chain-1 spaces, ending between the ring finger and little finger.

Tip: When trying on, the glove should reach the base of the little finger. Mark off spaces for the fingers on the palm and back of the hand using pins or colored threads.

Fingers:

  • Little Finger: Work chain-1 spaces around the palm side, then chain 4, and continue in rounds, making 2 chain-1 spaces over the chain-4. Continue until the piece reaches 1 row above the base of the nail. On the next round, make double crochets in each space around. Then work slip stitches in each double crochet around. Fasten off, leaving a 6-inch thread tail. Thread a needle with the tail and draw it through the last row of slip stitches. Tighten and fasten securely.
  • Ring Finger: Attach thread on the palm side and work around to the back of the hand until reaching the little finger. Make chain-1 spaces across the base of the little finger, work around the spaces of the ring finger on the palm side, chain 3, and work around the back spaces. Complete as for the little finger.
  • Middle Finger and Forefinger: Work as for the ring finger.
  • Thumb: Work in rounds as for other fingers, completing it in the same manner.

Edging at Wrist:

  1. 1st Round: Attach thread to the starting chain and work single crochets closely together around, keeping the work flat. Join.
  2. 2nd Round: Chain 3, in the same place as the slip stitch make (double crochet, chain 2, 2 double crochet). Chain 3, skip 3 single crochets, in the next single crochet make (2 double crochets, chain 2, 2 double crochets). Repeat from * around. Join the last chain-3 to the 3rd chain of chain-3.
  3. 3rd Round: Slip stitch in the next double crochet and into the next space, chain 3, in the same space make (2 double crochets, chain 2, 2 double crochets). Chain 4, in the next space between 2 double-crochet groups make (2 double crochets, chain 2, 2 double crochets). Repeat from * around. Join.
  4. 4th Round: Slip stitch in the next double crochet and into the next space, chain 3, in the same space make (3 double crochets, chain 3, 3 double crochets). Chain 3, slip stitch under 2 chains of the previous 2 rounds, chain 3, in the next space between double-crochet groups make (3 double crochets, chain 3, 3 double crochets). Repeat from * around. Join and fasten off.

Right Hand:

Work as for the Left Hand with these adjustments to ensure a proper fit for the Right Hand.

Wrist and Base of Glove:

  1. Foundation: Chain 55 to measure approximately 8 inches. Join with a slip stitch, ensuring the chain is not twisted.
  2. 1st Round: Chain 3, skip 1 chain, double crochet (dc) in next chain, chain 1. Repeat from * around, ending with a chain-1.

Thumb Opening (Adjusted for Right Hand):

  1. Work chain-1 spaces around to the first increase on this round but do not increase here. Chain 5, skip over the first increase space, and slip stitch into the second increase space, chain 1, then continue making chain-1 spaces to complete the round.
  2. Work 6 additional rounds of chain-1 spaces after the thumb opening, ending between the index finger and thumb.

Tip: When trying on, the glove should reach the base of the index finger. Mark off spaces for the fingers on the palm and back of the hand using pins or colored threads.

Fingers:

Thumb (Adjusted for Right Hand):

  • Work in rounds over the 5 chains of the thumb opening, making 2 chain-1 spaces over the chain-5.
  • Continue in rounds of chain-1 spaces until the thumb reaches just above the nail.
  • On the next round, make double crochets in each space around. Then work slip stitches in each double crochet around. Fasten off, leaving a 6-inch thread tail. Thread a needle with the tail and draw it through the last row of slip stitches. Tighten and fasten securely.

Index Finger:

  • Attach the thread on the palm side at the base of the thumb and work around the palm and back of the hand, filling in spaces for the index finger. Chain 3 between the base of the thumb and the finger opening if needed for a proper fit.
  • Work in rounds of chain-1 spaces until the finger reaches 1 row above the nail.
  • Complete the finger as for the thumb.

Middle, Ring, and Little Fingers:

  • For each finger, attach the thread at the base of the previous finger and work around the marked spaces for the current finger.
  • Chain across gaps between fingers as needed, typically chaining 3-4 chains for each finger gap.
  • Continue in rounds of chain-1 spaces until each finger reaches 1 row above the nail.
  • Complete each finger as for the thumb.

Edging at Wrist (Same as Left Hand):

  1. 1st Round: Attach thread to the starting chain and work single crochets closely together around, keeping the work flat. Join.
  2. 2nd Round: Chain 3, in the same place as the slip stitch make (double crochet, chain 2, 2 double crochets).
