If you’re like me you’re already in the Halloween spirit and ready to make some fun Halloween crochet items! This crochet ghost coaster is a good start. This free crochet pattern is fun to make and will help you decorate with Halloween cheer!
Alright, let’s get started!
For this project you will need:
- #4 medium weight yarn in the colors: blue, yellow and black
- #10 crochet thread in white
- A G/6 4.25 mm crochet hook for the coaster and yellow stars.
- A D/3 3.25 mm hook for the crochet thread
- Scissors
- Yarn needle for weaving in the yarn tails and sewing.
Crochet stitches used in this pattern (US terms):
Magic Circle aka Magic Ring
Ch – Chain
Hfd – Half double crochet
Ss – Slip stitch
Sc – Single crochet
Dc – Double crochet

Ghost Coaster Base
- With #4 weight blue yarn and “G” crochet hook: Make a magic circle aka magic ring
- Make 8 HDC into the magic ring at the end ss into the first HDC and ch 2
- Make 2HDC into each stitch around except the last stitch where you will make 1 and ss into the first ch 2 ( you should have 16 stitches total)
- Make 1 HDC into the first stitch, and 2 HDC into the next stitch. Repeat around then ss into the first ch 2 and ch 2.
- Make 1 HDC into the first 2 stitches, and 2 HDC into the next stitch. Repeat around then ss into the first ch 2 and ch 2.
- Make 1 HDC into the first 3 stitches, and 2 HDC into the next stitch. Repeat around then ss into the first ch 2 and ch 2.
- Make 1 HDC into the first 4 stitches, and 2 HDC into the next stitch. Repeat around then ss into the first ch 2. Work in the #4 weight black yarn at this point. You will be crocheting with black from this point on.
- Make 1 HDC into the first 5 stitches, and 2 HDC into the next stitch. Repeat around then ss into the first ch 2 and ch 3.
- Time to make the scalloped edge. Skip the first stitch, sc into the next st and make 5 DC into the third stitch. Repeat around until the last stitch where you will make 4 DC and ss into the first ch 3 then fasten off.
Ghost Crochet Applique Pattern
For the ghost applique we start with a chain and then work around the chain. I’ve separated the sections by body parts to make it easier.
Round 1
Initial Chain and Ghost Head
- With #10 crochet thread and “D” crochet hook: Chain 17
- Ss in 2nd chain from hook,
- Sc in the next ch
- Hdc in the next ch
- dc in next 3 chains
Neck
- Ss in the next 2 ch
Body
- Dc in next 4 ch
- Hdc in next
- Sc in next
- Ss in last ch
Back up the other side of the body
- Ss in next 2
- Sc in next
- Hdc in next
- Dc in next 3
Neck again (other side)
- Ss in next two stitches
Head (other side)
- dc in next 3 chains
- Hdc in the next ch and
- Sc in the next ch,
- Ss in next 2 stitches
- Ss into first chain you put the stitch marker in
Round 2
Head swoop
- Ch 3
- Ss in 2nd st
- Sc in next st
- Ss in first
Head
- Sc in the next ch,
- Hdc in the next ch and
- dc in next 4 chains,
Neck
- Ss in next 2 stitches
First Arm
- Dc in next
- Ch 4
- Ss in 2nd st from hook
- Sc in next
- Hdc in next
- Hdc in dc at ch 3
Body
- Hdc in next 2
- Sc in next 2
- Ss in next 4
Ghost Tail
- Ch 4 Ss into 2nd st from hook
- Ss in next 2n stitches
- Ss. Into initial stitch at base plus make a sc in same st
Back up the other side of the body
- Ss in next 3
- Sc in next 2
- Sc in next
Second Arm
- Sc ch4
- Ss second ch
- Ss in next 2
- Sc in next (note: if you want to give the arm a different look you can add a sc here)
Neck
- Ss in next 2
Head (other side)
- dc in next 4 chains,
- Hdc in the next ch and
- Sc in the next ch,
- Sc in next
- Ss in next 3
- ch 1 and fasten off
Sewing Everything Together
- Position the ghost applique on the coaster and sew it on using a piece of white crochet thread and a yarn needle.
- Use yellow #4 weight yarn to make stars by making an X and then adding another line on top.
- Weave in all the yarn tails and tie knots in the back to secure everything.
