Some recipes for cinnamon rolls call for a lot of sugar, this is not that kind of recipe.
We all love cinnamon rolls but sometimes they can be just a little bit too sweet. This recipe only calls for a total 1 1/4 cup added sugar. 1/4 in the dough, 1/4 in the filling and 3/4 cup powdered sugar in the frosting.
By comparison your average cinnamon roll recipe uses anywhere from a total of 1 3/4 to 3 1/2 cups added sugar.
So, if you’re like me and aren’t a huge fan of foods loaded with sugar, or you just want to cut back on your sugar intake, you will love this recipe! It’s still very sweet by the way, just not so sweet you feel like you just ate a bag of sugar.

- 2 tablespoons butter (softened)
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions
Making the Cinnamon Roll Dough
- Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
- In your mixing bowl combine 3/4 cups flour, 1/4 cup sugar, 1 teaspoon salt, 2 1/4 teaspoon instant yeast, 1 teaspoon cinnamon and (optional) a pinch of nutmeg. Mix.
- In a sauce pan on medium low heat melt 6 tablespoons of butter.
- Once the butter is melted combine 1/2 cup milk and 1/2 cup sour cream. Turn off heat once it’s warmed.
- Whisk egg into the saucepan, then mix the contents of the saucepan into your dry ingredients.
- Once your dough is mixed, move your dough to a flat floured surface and knead the dough. Then let rest while you make the filling.
- In a small bowl combine 1/4 cup sugar and 1 tablespoon of cinnamon. Set aside.
- Now back to the cinnamon roll dough. Roll out the dough. Ours was rolled out until it measured about 22 x 17 inches.
- Spread room temperature butter over the rolled out dough.
- Then sprinkle the filling mixture evenly onto the dough and roll it until it makes a long log.
- Slice up your cinnamon rolls. We cut ours about 1 inch wide, but if you want you can cut them up to 2 inches wide.
- Grease a large baking dish with either butter or vegetable oil and dust with flour. This will help keep the cinnamon rolls from sticking.
- Place in the oven and bake for 30-35 minutes.
- While the cinnamon rolls are baking you can make the frosting.
Cream Cheese Frosting
- In a food processor combine 4 oz cream cheese, 2 tablespoons softened butter, 1 teaspoon vanilla extract, 3/4 cup powdered sugar and 1 teaspoon milk. Blend until well combined.
- Once the cinnamon rolls are done take out of the oven and frost with your cream cheese frosting while they are still hot. Let the cinnamon rolls cool and then enjoy!
