Dutch Bag Crochet Pattern
Materials:
- Size 10 crochet thread (the pattern originally used J. & P. Coats Knit-Cro-Sheen), 3 balls in any color. Crochet with 2 strands of thread at once throughout.
- Optional Alternative: Use lightweight (#1) yarn instead of double-threaded #10 crochet thread. Check gauge and adjust hook size as needed.
- Steel crochet hooks: Size 2 (2.25 mm) and Size 6 (1.8 mm)
- Six-strand embroidery floss, 1 skein each of 4 contrasting colors
- A piece of buckram (7 x 11 inches)
- Lining material
- 1 snap fastener
Gauge:
- 13 sts make 2 inches; 7 rows make 1 inch.
Notes:
- Use double thread throughout.
- This pattern consists of a matching hat and bag, with decorative embroidery floss accents.
Dutch Bag Instructions
Main Body:
- Foundation Chain: With Size 2 hook, ch 48 (to measure approximately 7 inches).
- Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across (47 sc). Ch 1, turn.
- Row 2 (Pattern Row): Sc in the back loop of the first sc, sc in the front loop of the next sc. Repeat from * across. Ch 1, turn.
- Repeat Row 2 until the piece measures 12 inches.
Shaping the Flap:
- Begin decreasing: Dec 1 sc at both ends of each row until 15 sc remain.
- Continue decreasing by 2 sc per row (1 sc at each end) until 5 sc remain.
- Fasten off. Work a row of sc along the shaped edge to even it off.
Gusset and Shoulder Strap:
- Foundation Chain: Ch 8.
- Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across (7 sc). Ch 1, turn.
- Repeat Row 1 (in the same pattern as the main bag body) until the piece measures 32 inches. Fasten off.
Finishing:
- Mark Bottom Edge: Measure 3 inches down from the straight end of the bag piece and mark with a pin. Then measure 1 inch away from this pin and mark again. This 1-inch area will be the bottom of the bag.
- Attach Gusset: Sew the ends of the gusset/shoulder strap to the edges of this 1-inch section. Then sew the sides of the bag piece to the gusset for 5 inches, leaving the rest as the bag flap.
Lining:
- Cut a piece of lining material measuring 8 x 13 inches. Place buckram on top of the lining and fold over ½ inch on two long ends and one short end. Press and machine stitch ⅛ inch in from the edge.
- Machine stitch across the buckram 3 inches in from each 7-inch end. Fold at this stitching, keeping the lining inside.
- Sew gussets of lining material to fit between the 5-inch edges of the crocheted bag. Slip the lining into the bag and whipstitch the edges together neatly.
- Turn under the raw edges of the remaining lining material and face the crocheted flap with it.
Decorative Circles:
- Decorative Circles:
- With Size 6 hook and one color of six-strand embroidery floss, ch 2.
- 1st Round: Make 7 sc in the 2nd ch from the hook. Do not join rounds.
- 2nd Round: 2 sc in each sc around (14 sc).
- 3rd Round: Sc in the next sc, 2 sc in the next sc. Repeat from * around (21 sc).
- Sl st in the next sc and fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing.
- Make 4 circles of each color (16 circles total).
- Sew the circles to the center of the bag flap. Attach a snap fastener beneath the flap to secure the bag.
