The Habitat Hat Knitting Pattern

Materials:

  • P & B Superior Double Knitting Yarn, Patonised: 4 ozs. Substitute any DK weight (size 3, light weight) Yarn
  • Knitting Needles: Two No. 8 and two No. 6 Beehive Knitting Needles.
  • Metallic Thread: Approximately 2 yards.
  • Beads: 30 small pearl beads.
  • Crochet Hook: One No. 4 Steel Crochet Hook (American Gauge).
  • Beading Needle: For attaching beads.

Head Size:

22 inches.

Gauge:

  • 5 stitches and 7 rows = 1 inch with No. 8 needles.
  • Check your tension to ensure the correct size.

Instructions:

Hat:
  1. Begin the Tucks:
    Using No. 6 needles, cast on 99 stitches.
    Tuck Section (Repeat these rows):
  • Row 1: Knit.
  • Row 2: Purl.
    Repeat Rows 1 and 2 twice, then knit Row 1 once.
    (You should have 7 rows in total. The purl side will be the right side of the work.)
  1. Transition to No. 8 Needles:
  • Row 8: Knit.
  • Row 9: (K1, P1) to last 21 stitches, K1. Turn.
  • Row 10: (Slip the first stitch, work the rest as (K1, P1) to last 21 stitches, K1. Turn.
  • Rows 11 and 12: (K1, P1) to last 11 stitches, K1. Turn.
  • Row 13: (K1, P1) to the end of the row.
  • Row 14: Knit. Repeat these rows (Rows 1–14) three times.
  1. Begin Decreasing:
  • First Decrease Row: (K1, P1) twice, K1. P3tog. (K1, P1) 5 times, K1. Repeat until the last 10 stitches, P3tog, (K1, P1) three times, K1.
  • Repeat the Moss Stitch pattern for 4 rows. Continue Decreasing Rows:
  • Second Decrease Row: (K1, P1) 4 times, K1, P3tog. Repeat until the last stitch, K1.
  • Work 11 rows in Moss Stitch.
  • Third Decrease Row: (K1, P1) 3 times, P3tog. Repeat to the last 8 stitches, P3tog, (K1, P1) twice, K1.
  • Work 11 rows in Moss Stitch.
  • Fourth Decrease Row: (K1, P1) twice, K1, P3tog. Repeat to the last stitch, K1.
  • Work 11 rows in Moss Stitch.
  • Fifth Decrease Row: K1, P3tog, K1, P1, K1. Repeat to the end of the row.
  • Work 11 rows in Moss Stitch.
  • Sixth Decrease Row: K1, P3tog, K1. Repeat to the end of the row.
  • Work 3 rows in Moss Stitch. Break the yarn, thread through the remaining stitches, and draw up tightly. Fasten securely.
  1. Finishing the Tucks:
    Sew together the two knit rows before and after each tuck section. Repeat for the remaining tucks, securing the structure.
    Sew grosgrain ribbon to the inside of the hat along the cast-on edge if desired.

Tassel:

  1. Create the Tassel:
  • Cut a piece of cardboard 4 inches square.
  • Wind the yarn around the cardboard 40 times.
  • Thread a blunt needle with yarn, slip it through the loops, and tie tightly at one edge. Remove the cardboard.
  • Wind yarn around the loops about ¾ inch below the fold and tie securely. Cut the other end to form a tassel and even the ends.
  1. Create the Tassel Cover:
  • With metallic thread, ch 4 sts. Join with a slip stitch to form a ring.
  • Round 1: Work 6 sc into the ring.
  • Round 2: Work 2 sc into each sc of the previous round (12 sc).
  • Round 3: (2 sc into 1 sc, 1 sc into the next 2 sc). Repeat around (16 sc).
  • Work 5 more rounds of sc, and fasten off.
  1. Attach the Tassel to the Hat:
  • With metallic thread, create a 1¼-inch chain and sew it to the top of the cover.
  • Sew the tassel cover onto the tassel, then attach the chain to the top of the hat.
  • Secure the tassel lightly to the lower edge of the hat.
