Simple Calot Hat Crochet Pattern

Materials

  • Original Yarn: Clark’s O.N.T. Cotton Rug Yarn, 1 ball of any color.
  • Modern Equivalent: Use Worsted Weight #4 yarn in your preferred color. Approximately 200 yards needed.
  • Hook: Steel Crochet Hook Size G (4.0 mm).
  • Gauge: 7 sts = 2 inches; 3 rounds = 1½ inches.

Instructions

Calot

  1. Foundation Round:
  • Ch 4. In the 4th ch from hook, work 11 dc. Join with a sl st in the top of the starting ch-4.
  1. Round 2:
  • Ch 2, working in back loops only, make 2 hdc in the first st and 1 hdc in the next. Repeat this pattern (2 hdc in 1 st, 1 hdc in next) evenly around, increasing 9 sts in total (21 sts). Join with a sl st in the first hdc.
  1. Round 3:
  • Ch 1, working in back loops only, make sc in each st, increasing 6 sts evenly around (27 sts). Join with a sl st in the first sc.
  1. Round 4:
  • Ch 3, working in back loops only, make dc in each st, increasing 12 sts evenly around (39 sts). Join with a sl st in the first dc.
  1. Repeat Rounds 2, 3, and 4 once more. (66 sts)
  2. Body of Calot:
  • Continue in the established pattern (alternating hdc, sc, and dc rounds, working in back loops only) without increasing until the hat measures 5½ inches from the top.
  1. Final Round:
  • Work a round of sl sts in each st around, being careful to maintain the desired head size. Fasten off.

Tassel

  1. Create the Chain:
  • Make a chain 5½ inches long.
  1. Prepare the Tassel:
  • Cut remaining yarn into 24-inch lengths and tie them together at the center.
  • Wrap a separate piece of yarn around the tassel near the top, winding it 3 times to create a neat top section. Fasten securely.
  1. Attach the Tassel:
  • Fasten the tassel to one end of the chain. Attach the other end of the chain to the top center of the calot.
  • Tack the chain down along the top of the hat to cover the joining rounds and secure it in place.

Finishing

  • Lightly block the hat if needed, shaping it to fit snugly.
  • This Simple Calot Hat is perfect for a cozy yet stylish vintage look!
