Dutch Hat for Children Crochet Pattern

Materials:

  • Size 10 crochet thread (the pattern originally used J. & P. Coats Knit-Cro-Sheen), 3 balls in any color. Use double strands of thread as you crochet.
    • Optional Alternative: Use lightweight (#1) yarn instead of double-threaded #10 crochet thread. Check gauge and adjust hook size as needed.
  • Steel crochet hooks: Size 2 (2.25 mm) and Size 6 (1.8 mm)
  • Six-strand embroidery floss, 1 skein each of 4 contrasting colors
  • A piece of buckram, 7 x 11 inches
  • Lining material
  • 1 snap fastener

Gauge:
13 sts make 2 inches; 7 rows make 1 inch.

Notes:
Use double thread throughout. Adjust hat size by modifying the starting chain or rows as needed.


Instructions:

Hat Body:

  1. Foundation Chain: With Size 2 hook, ch 106 (to measure approximately 16 inches).
  2. 1st Row: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across (105 sc). Ch 1, turn.
  3. 2nd Row: Sc in the back loop of the 1st sc, sc in the front loop of the next sc, sc in the back loop of the next sc. Repeat from * across. Ch 1, turn.
  4. Repeat the 2nd Row until the piece measures 6½ inches. Fasten off and turn.

Back Piece:

  1. Attach thread in the 39th sc from the end of the front edge, ch 1, and sc in the back loop of the same sc where the thread was attached.
  2. Work in the pattern (as established) across the next 28 sc (29 sc total). Do not work across the remaining 38 sc. Ch 1, turn.
  3. Continue working in the pattern for 6 inches. Fasten off.

Assembly:

  1. Sew the side edges of the back piece to the remaining 38 sc on each side of the front piece.
  2. Attach thread to the lower edge, 2½ inches in from the front edge, and work sc evenly across the lower edge to the corresponding position on the other side. Hold the hat in position to ensure a proper fit. Fasten off.

Decorative Circles:

  1. With Size 6 hook and one color of six-strand embroidery floss, ch 2.
  2. 1st Round: Make 7 sc in the 2nd ch from the hook. Do not join rounds.
  3. 2nd Round: 2 sc in each sc around (14 sc).
  4. 3rd Round: Sc in the next sc, 2 sc in the next sc. Repeat from * around (21 sc).
  5. Sl st in the next sc and fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing.

Make 4 circles of each color (16 circles total).


Finishing Touches:

  1. Turn the front edge of the hat back 1 inch at the center front, allowing both points to turn back about 2 inches.
  2. Sew the decorative circles to the right side of the turned-back points as shown in the illustration.
  3. Attach lining material to the inside of the hat for structure. Secure the buckram to the lining for added stiffness.
  4. Sew the snap fastener to secure the hat at the back or side as desired.
