Dutch Cap Crochet Pattern
Materials:
- J. & P. Coats Knit-Cro-Sheen (size 10 crochet thread), 2 balls in any color – you will be dividing these balls in half (essentially having 4 half balls) then you will use a strand from each ball and crochet with 4 strands together.
- Alternatively you could use a worsted weight size 4 yarn.
- Bone Crochet Hook No. 6
Gauge:
- 5 double crochets (dc) = 1 inch
- 2 rows = 1 1/8 inches
Preparation if using size 10 crochet thread:
Before beginning, wind each ball of thread in half to create four balls of thread. Then Take thread from each ball. Use all 4 threads held together throughout the pattern.
Crown:
- Starting at the tip of the crown:
- Chain (ch) 4. Join with a slip stitch (sl st) to form a ring.
- 1st Round:
- Ch 3 (counts as the first double crochet, dc), work 10 dc into the ring. Do not join rounds. (11 dc total)
- 2nd Round:
- Work 2 dc into the 3rd ch of the starting ch-3, 1 dc in the next dc, 2 dc in the next dc. Repeat from * around. (17 dc total)
- 3rd and 4th Rounds:
- Work 2 dc in the next dc, 1 dc in the next dc. Repeat from * around. (39 dc at the end of Round 4)
- 5th Round:
- Work 1 dc in each dc around. (No increases)
- 6th Round:
- Work 1 dc in each dc around to the last dc, then make 3 dc in the last dc. This marks the center back of the cap.
- 7th Round:
- Work 1 dc in each dc until you reach the center dc of the 3-dc group, then make 3 dc in the center dc, and finish the round with 1 dc in the last dc.
- 8th to 13th Rounds (inclusive):
- Work 1 dc in each dc until you reach the center dc of the 3-dc group, then make 3 dc in the center dc of the group, and continue with 1 dc in each remaining dc.
- On the 13th round, end with a 3-dc group, then make 1 dc in the next dc, and 1 single crochet (sc) in each of the next 2 dc.
Dutch Cap Brim:
- 1st Row:
- Ch 3, skip 1 dc, sc in the next dc. Repeat from * to within 2 dc of the 3-dc group at the back. Ch 1, turn.
- Rows 2 to 5 (inclusive):
- Sc in the first sc, ch 3, sc in the next sc. Repeat from * across. Ch 1, turn.
- 6th Row:
- Work 2 sc in the first sc, ch 3, 2 sc in the next sc. Repeat from * across. Ch 1, turn.
- 7th, 8th, and 9th Rows:
- Sc in each of the first 2 sc, ch 3, sc in each of the next 2 sc. Repeat from * across. Ch 1, turn.
- Fasten Off:
- At the end of Row 9, fasten off.
Finishing:
- Turn the front of the Brim back against the Crown.
- Fold the corners of the back of the Brim against the Crown and tack in place.
- Steam and press gently to shape.
