Today we’re going to make a colorful crochet flower granny square that’s beautiful and fun to make. I wouldn’t exactly call this a beginner pattern. This is more intermediate to advanced, but don’t let that discourage you from trying if you’re a beginner. After all, you have to start trying more advanced patterns some time and now may be as good a time as any!
This is a simple (-ish) 8 petal flower pattern that requires 5 different yarn colors. I love the colorful vibrant look of this flower granny square and I hope you will too.

Flower Granny Square FREE Crochet Pattern Instructions
Color A
- Make a magic circle
- Make 8 SC into magic circle. (you may want to use a piece of yarn as a stitch marker here)
- SS into first stitch and work in Color B.
Color B
- Ch 3 and DC into first stitch.
- DC2Tog and Ch one into each stitch around.
- SS into first stitch (which is a chain 3 from step one) and work in Color C.
Color C
- SC into first stitch.
- In the next stitch: SS and Ch 3, DC2Tog, Ch3 then SS all into that one stitch.
- Repeat steps 1-2 around.
- At the end of the round SS into first stitch and fasten off Color C.
Color D (has two rounds)
Round 1
- Loop in Color D
- SC and Ch 3
- Now, we’re going to ignore the petals, working behind them into the stitch between the petals. Flip each petal forward as you work if that helps (something I hadn’t thought about doing when I made the video..lol).
You’re going to SC into the stitch between the first two petals and chain 2. Repeat around.
Round 2
- SS into first SC
- Now we’re going to be working in the chain spaces we made in round one.
Make 3 DC into first chain space, Ch 2 and make another 3 DC into that same chain space and Ch 1. This will make your first corner. - In the next chain space make 2DC and Ch 1.
- Repeat steps 2 -3 around.
- At the end of the round SS into first DC and fasten off.
Color E
- Loop in Color E in the Ch one space right before the first corner (essentially about the spot you fastened off).
- Chain 3 and 2 DC into that same space.
- In the corner section make 3 DC, Ch2 and another 3 DC.
- Make 3 DC in the next 2 chain sections.
- Repeat steps 3-4 around.
- At the end of the round, fasten off.
And now, you’ve completed your flower granny square!
