Lattice Squares Potholder Crochet Pattern

The Lattice Squares Potholder is a charming addition to your kitchen, combining functionality and vintage elegance. The intricate lattice design, created with alternating rows of Ecru and accents of Hunter’s Green, adds texture and visual appeal. The use of double crochet stitches and chain spaces ensures the pattern is simple enough for intermediate crocheters while producing a stunning geometric effect. Whether for practical use or as a decorative accent, this potholder is sure to impress.

The addition of Hunter’s Green accents enhances the design, forming a grid-like structure that gives the potholder its unique look. The slip-stitched green threads create a vibrant lattice effect, drawing the eye to the symmetry of the squares. The option to use lightweight #1 yarn instead of double strands of size 10 crochet thread makes it versatile, allowing you to choose materials that suit your preferences while maintaining the original aesthetic.

The finishing touches, including neatly sewn edges, padding for heat resistance, and a bone ring for hanging, make this potholder both practical and durable. It’s an excellent project for honing crochet skills while crafting a timeless, vintage-inspired kitchen accessory. Perfect as a gift or a personal project, the Lattice Squares Potholder blends style and utility seamlessly.

Materials:

  • Size 10 crochet thread (2 balls of Ecru and 1 ball of Hunter’s Green; the pattern originally used J. & P. Coats Crochet Cord). Alternatively, you can use lightweight #1 yarn. Be sure to check your gauge and adjust your hook size accordingly.
  • Steel Crochet Hook No. 7
  • A bone ring

Gauge: 9 chain stitches to 1 inch (adjust hook size if needed to match gauge).

Instructions:

Front Piece:

  1. Foundation Row: With Ecru, make a chain approximately 8 inches long (or the desired width).
  • Tip: Count 9 chain stitches per inch to achieve the right width.
  1. Row 1: Work 1 double crochet (dc) in the 4th chain from the hook and in the next 6 chains. (ch 2, skip 2 chains, dc in the next 7 chains); repeat from * to the end. Cut off any remaining unused chain stitches. Ch 3, turn.
  2. Rows 2-3: Work 1 dc in the next 6 dc, (ch 2, dc in the next 7 dc); repeat from * to the end, making the last dc in the top stitch of the turning chain. Ch 3, turn.
  3. Row 4: Ch 2, skip 2 stitches, dc in the next stitch. Repeat from * across, ending with dc in the top stitch of the turning chain. Ch 3, turn.
  4. Row 5: (Work 2 dc in the chain space, dc in the next dc) twice; ch 2, dc in the next dc. Repeat from * across, ending with 2 dc in the last chain space, dc in the center stitch of the turning chain.
  5. Repeat Rows 2 to 5 until the piece forms a square, ending with a Row 3. Break off Ecru.

Adding Green Accents:

  1. Using 4 strands of Hunter’s Green, insert your hook into the first chain space of the foundation row.
  2. Make a loop and draw it through the space and the loop on your hook (slip stitch). Continue slip stitching through each chain space to the top of the piece. Break off Green.
  3. Repeat this process along all rows of chain spaces, forming a lattice pattern of squares.

Back Piece:

  • Make a second piece identical to the first.

Finishing:

  1. Padding: Cut flannel or cotton batting slightly smaller than the crocheted pieces, and cut lining fabric slightly larger. Place the padding between the two crocheted pieces, with the lining against the back piece.
  2. Assembly: Turn under the edges of the lining fabric and sew it neatly to the crocheted edges using over-and-over stitches.
  3. Attach Bone Ring: Sew the bone ring securely to one corner for hanging.
