Light Weight Lace Crochet Gloves Pattern

Materials:

  • Size 10 crochet thread (the pattern originally used J. & P. Coats Knit-Cro-Sheen)
  • Steel crochet hook: Size 7 (or size needed to obtain gauge)

Gauge:

  • 9¼ spaces make 2 inches
  • 2 single crochet rows and 3 rows of spaces make 1 inch

General Notes:

  • Work is done vertically.

Left Hand: Palm Section

Starting at the little finger side of the palm:

  1. Foundation Chain: Chain 73 to measure approximately 8½ inches.
  2. 1st Row: Single crochet (sc) in the 2nd chain from the hook and in each chain across (72 sc). Chain 4, turn.
  3. 2nd Row: Skip 1 sc, double crochet (dc) in the next sc, chain 1. Repeat from * across (36 spaces). Chain 4, turn.
  4. 3rd and 4th Rows: Dc in the next dc, chain 1. Repeat from * across. At the end of the 4th row, chain only 1 to turn (this marks the tip of the little finger).
  5. 5th Row:Sc in the next dc, sc in the next chain-1 space. Repeat from * across to the space between the little finger and ring finger.
    • Chain a length ½ inch longer than the ring finger. Sc in the 2nd chain from the hook and in each chain across to within 1st space.
    • Continue: Sc in the next space, sc in the next dc. Repeat from * to the wrist edge of the glove. Chain 4, turn.
  6. Repeat the last 4 rows (2nd to 5th rows) 3 more times, making the starting chain of each finger ½ inch longer than the length between fingers to fingertip. Ensure the same number of rows for each finger. Fasten off at the end of the palm.

Left Hand: Back of Hand

  1. Foundation Chain: Starting on the same side as the palm, chain 72 to measure approximately 8½ inches.
  2. 1st Row: Sc in the 2nd chain from the hook and in each chain across (71 sc). Chain 1, turn.
  3. 2nd Row: Sc in each sc across. Chain 4, turn.
  4. 3rd Row: Dc in the 1st sc, (skip 2 sc, in the next sc make dc, chain 1, dc) twice; skip 3 sc, in the next sc make dc, chain 1, dc. Repeat from * across (22 dc groups made). Chain 4, turn.
  5. 4th Row: Between the 1st and 2nd groups, make (dc, chain 1, dc); skip the 2nd group. Between the 2nd and 3rd groups, make (dc, chain 1, dc). Continue across until 21 groups are made. Chain 1, dc in the 3rd chain of the turning chain from the previous row. Chain 1, turn.
  6. 5th Row: Sc in the dc just made, 2 sc in the next space, sc in each of the next dc, chain-1, and dc groups. Repeat from * across to within the last space, 2 sc in the last space, sc in the next stitch of the turning chain. Chain 1, turn.
  7. 6th Row: Sc in each sc across until work reaches between the little finger and ring finger. Then, chain a length ½ inch longer than the little finger.
    • Sc in the 2nd chain from the hook and in each chain across. Slip stitch in the next sc and fasten off.
    • Attach the thread to the first sc at the tip of the ring finger, sc in the same place where the thread was attached, sc in each sc across to the wrist edge. Chain 4, turn.
  8. Repeat the last 4 rows (3rd to 6th rows) 3 more times, making the starting chain of each finger ½ inch longer than the length from between fingers to the fingertip and having the same number of rows on each finger. Fasten off.

Assembling the Glove:

  1. Place the palm over the back of the hand and pin them together.
  2. Measure 1 inch from the wrist edge on the side opposite the little finger and mark with a pin. Measure ¾ inch up from the pin and mark with another pin.
  3. Sew the ¾ inch section (between the pin marks) together using over-and-over stitches. Secure the ends. Remove the pins.
  4. Measure 2¾ inches up from the sewn section and mark with a pin (this marks the thumb opening).
  5. Sew the back and palm together around the fingers and up to within 1 inch of the wrist edge at the little finger side. Curve the stitching around the finger tips for a better fit. Leave the thumb opening unsewn.

Thumb:

  1. First Half of Thumb:
    • With the palm side facing, attach the thread to the top of the thumb opening. Chain a length ½ inch longer than the length of the thumb.
    • 1st Row: Sc in the 2nd chain from the hook and in each chain across. Sc in the next 4 sc on the palm side of the glove. Chain 2, turn.
    • 2nd Row: Skip 1 sc, dc in the next sc, chain 1. Repeat from * to the tip of the thumb. Chain 4, turn.
    • 3rd Row: Dc in the next dc, chain 1. Repeat from *, making a dc where the chain-2 started on the previous row, chain 1, skip 1 sc, sc in the next 5 sc on the palm of the glove. Chain 1, turn.
    • 4th Row: Repeat the 2nd row.
    • 5th Row: Dc in the next dc, chain 1. Repeat from * across, making a dc where the chain-2 started on the previous row. Chain 1, skip 1 sc on the palm, dc in the next sc. Repeat from * to the lower joining of the thumb opening. Chain 1, turn.
    • 6th Row: Sc in the next space, sc in the next dc. Repeat from * across and over the tip of the thumb to the first sc row. Slip stitch in the first sc. Fasten off.
  2. Second Half of Thumb:
    • With the palm side facing, attach the thread to the top of the thumb opening and work the second half to correspond with the first half.
  3. Sew the two thumb edges neatly together.

Right Hand

Palm Section (Right Hand):

  1. Foundation Chain: Starting at the thumb side of the palm, chain 73 to measure approximately 8½ inches.
  2. 1st Row: Single crochet (sc) in the second chain from the hook and in each chain across. (72 sc). Chain 4, turn.
  3. 2nd Row: Skip 1 sc, double crochet (dc) in the next sc, chain 1. Repeat from * across (36 spaces). Chain 4, turn.

    • For the Thumb Opening: Chain ½ inch longer than the length of the thumb and turn.
  7. 6th Row (Start Thumb Shaping):

Continue Pattern:

  1. Repeat rows 3–6 three more times:
    • Each finger’s starting chain should be ½ inch longer than the distance between fingers to the tip of the respective finger.
    • Ensure the same number of rows are completed for each finger.

Assembly for Right Hand:

  1. Joining Back and Palm:
    • Pin the palm and back of hand together.
    • Start sewing the edges 1 inch from the wrist edge on the side opposite the thumb.
    • Sew ¾ inch upward, leaving a 2¾-inch opening for the thumb.
    • Remove the pins and continue sewing the edges together around the fingers and palm, leaving 1 inch open at the wrist edge on the little-finger side.
  2. Sew the Thumb Opening: Same as for the Left Hand, but ensure the thumb placement fits the Right Hand.

Thumb (Right Hand):

  1. Foundation:
    • With the Palm side facing, attach thread to the top of the thumb opening.
  2. Create Foundation Chain:
    • Chain a length that is ½ inch longer than the desired length of the thumb (approximately the length from the base of the thumb opening to the tip of the thumb).
